Have a look around Moto Mate in Rivonia, I still kick myself when I
see some of the same things I have going for way less than I paid
there, even against other Moto Mates. That's about the closest you
can get in narrowing your options outside of real world testing/use.
And so for other stores too.

It's hard to try and recommend things that have great reviews
elsewhere or online and are not available here and not at the same
    price if so either.

With visors though, it's said they can be a little less safe if
you're really that specific, as with the hollow in the helmet for the
    visor to retract/extend.

I would have liked one, sunglasses that fit well on your face don't
always fit well inside a helmet. I'd take note of the mechanism on
the visor too, it's something that could wear poorly or even break if
the helmet has an overcomplicated mechanism or bad design for that.

Paid around R3500 for it last year from one of the bike shops in Boksburg.

So I ended up buying a HJC IS-17. Went to Motomate in Rivonia. After trying on what felt like all their helmets, I discovered that the IS-17 fit the best and it was priced well below my budget.
I also discovered that my head doesn't fit properly in a Shark helmet. I'm right between two sizes, what a shame because I really liked the Shark Spartan.

Have had a fews Shark helmets (back to back with 3). Only criticism is that they are not the quietest. But all around a great helmet for its cost. I have had all 3 of the same model and they have been upgrades on each one. Very happy with Shark.

I believe you. I personally love the brand. It's just a shame my head doesn't fit in it.

I am looking a for a quieter helmet, I am currently using a Bell Qualifier but I find it a very noisy helmet. Preferably also a helmet with anti fog visor, any suggestions will be appreciated!

do you wear a balaclava? I find balaclavas fill in the gaps that wind and noise can get through.... also keeps my earphones in place nice and snug...

Don't you find yourself overheating with a balaclava on in the summer?

I also have the Bell Qualifer, must say I'm not a fan of that specific helmet. It's the worst helmet I've ever worn in the rain...

Currently riding with a HJC IS17. It is quite good for the money I paid for it, but is still a bit noisy. And ventilation isn't great. But love the pin lock insert and drop down sun visor.

Kristoe, the balaclava doesn't heat up my pip at all. or actually I haven't tried without a balaclava during the mid-day summer heat. I commute mostly so it's always the cooler mornings and evenings and most outrides with the pals are early morning as well.
I did give the balaclava a skip on Monday and the noise levels were much higher, wind in helmet was more noticeable so I'll stick with the balaclava.
riding with an HJC TR-1 shell weighing a hefty 1650 grams. I've never had neck muscles like this before.

Yeah, I ride a naked bike on the highway (104km commute a day) so yeah my neck muscles have never been this strong either!

But I ride at after sunrise in the mornings and between 4 and half past 4 in the afternoons. And it gets hot! I tell you.

Have been thinking of getting a cool down vest. Has anyone worn one? Does it really work? And do your clothes stay dry?

Just wet your buff and put that around your neck - simple, effective and doesn't cost moola

I've heard that before. Will give it a go and see if it cools me down enough.

The week before last week was bloody hot! Almost went to BMW and bought a cooldown vest! Only problem is, it's awkward to get the vest wet before I leave at work. So I'm really holding thumbs for the buff idea. Will try it when it gets really hot again.

    Hi Roy,

I've broken the face shield on mine as well. It is a known fault on the 1st Gen Skwal helmets. They break where it clicks into the helmet.

After doing some homework I found out if the lid is not older than 5 years (If I remember correctly) you can have the visor replaced free of charge. So I took the helmet to Langston Motorsport (they are the main importers of Shark in SA) in Midrand (on New Road). There they fitted a brand new one free of charge. And I think they also upgraded the mechanism to the updated design.

Yes i also had the last one fitted free of charge, even the guy at Moto Mia broke it trying to fit it for me.
Problem is that now I am too scared to even take it off to clean it
I will check with the guys in Midrand as you say maybe I can get them to replace the mechanism for me?

Yeah they are a bit finicky.
Here's Langston Motorsport's number: *(011) 805-5559‬. Give them a call on Monday and see what they say. Hope you come right.

I know they also fixed my Bell Qualifer helmet under warranty there. So if anyone on here has a Bell or Shark helmet, they are the guys to go to get claims quickly resolved. That's where all the dealers send helmets with problems, if you can cut out the middleman, why not?
