Thoughts on Batt HP series 2 tyres
Hi guys,
I'm looking at new tyres for my bike. In the past I've ran Michelin Road Pilot 4's, Dunlop Roadsmart 2 and 3's as well as Michelin power CT's. What I'm looking for in a tyre is longevity and good grip in wet and dry conditions. I commute daily. The road pilot 4 have been great so far. But I was wondering if there isn't a cheaper alternative. Has anyone ever fitted Batt hp series 2 tyres and if so what was your experience with it?

When Batt tyres were launched here, about 10 Think Bike Marshals were supplied with a set of tyres free of charge to test them for the guys. I am sure if you are patient they will pop in during the next few days and give you feedback. I wasn't a tester and I didn't see any of the weekly reports, but I never heard anyone complain either.

The guys who race on Batt slicks seems impressed so far.
I believe the Batts are locally designed, an made in China. The beauty is they were designed with our roads in mind.

Just an update. I've spoken to Bruce from Bike Tyre Warehouse, who sells the Batt HP series 2 tyres. He reckons you get between 12k and 18k on a set. So I'm going to dive in and give them a try, just to see for myself.

Safe rides with the new tyres

I think it is about time I give an update. Since fitting these badboys I've done about 7 000 km.
I'll attach a few pictures of the tyres in their current state. You can see they still have quite a lot of life left in them. The rear tyre is just starting to square off a little (I do 85% of my commute on the highway).
The tyres grip quite well for commuting in dry weather. I've never had it slip around a corner or under hard acceleration.
I've not ridden in wet weather with them yet, although the rainy season is almost upon us, I'll give an update as soon as I've ridden in the rain with them.
Now for a few facts: My bike with me and daily luggage weighs about 325kg. I ride about 85% of my commute at between 120 and 150ish km per hour and I might do a speed run every now and again. Never do burn outs, so do not put unnecessary wear on the tyres, etc.
To sum it up, I'm really happy with my purchase. Will I buy them again? It depends how well they perform in the wet, but so far I'm really very satisfied with their performance.

So last year 9 December I replaced my Batt HP series 2 tyres. I did 14 373 km on them. Here are my final thoughts on them:
In dry conditions they are quite good. In wet conditions they're okay, not great. You have to be very careful and conscious on wet roads. I had them slip a few times in the wet when I wasn't careful.
Bruce from Bike Tyre Warehouse was very surprised that I only managed to get about 14 000km from the rear, and said he was going to sent that specific tyre in for testing, because most clients gets about 19 000km on theirs.
Now comes the real question: Did I buy them again. Sadly no. I went back to the old trusted Michelin Road Pilot 4's. Will I buy HP series 2's again? Maybe.
I'll attach a photo of my rear tyre on the day of replacement. Also, if you want to read more on these tyres, see the February Ride Fast magazine.
Nice personal update there, super helpful for other commuters for sure. Curious questions or 2:
1. What's the engine capacity of your bike?
2. What rear size tyre did you fit?
3. When replacing the Batts, what was the tyre life left in the front (squaring to also be considered) - clearly the rear was a gonna.
4. If it was a Randelas decision that you had to make in comparison with the Road Pilots, could we say for every x2 sets of Batts you go through a Pilot set?
5. You managed 18k on the Batts, what did you previously get on the Pilots?
If I read and understand well, with Pilots between you and the wet surface, you have more confidence that the bike will remain upright in comparison to the Batts?

Sure here's my answers to your questions:
1. 1170cc
2. 190/50/R-17
3. I could have run another rear tyre with the old front tyre.
4. If I understand you correct, comparing the two would be like this: Batts are R2800 for a combo, RP5 (RP4's are discontinued) are R3800. I got 14 000km's from the Batts and previously got 20 000km's from the RP4's. You can do the math from here.
5. I got just over 14 000km's from the Batts, but according to Bruce from Bike tyre warehouse most people get about 19 000km's. Previously I got about 20 000km's from the RP4's.
Bonus question: Yes the Batts didn't inspire confidence on wet roads, and because I commute on my bike everyday, I rather spend the extra R1000, for those wet days. Other than the wet performance the Batts are great tyres for commuting.
