So, while looking for gum poles I came across this and couldn't resist the novelty of owning one, plus having something to fiddle with...







Basically it is a Slovakian Moped manufactured in 1995 by Manet under a Piaggio licence with a Puch E50 50cc two stroke motor developing 2kw. Apparently this motor is quite advanced from the original Puch motor, with bigger ports, roller bearing crank and a single Dykes piston ring.

Top speed is 40 km/h and fuel consumption between 44-50 km/l

The frame is the fuel tank, and to fill it to capacity (About 3.5 liter, a vent in the rear of the frame has to be opened)

The electrical system is 6 volt and this model did not come out with brake lights, indicators, dim/bright or a hooter.

Obstacles so far:
Fuel tank has been left open, therefore rusted
Carburetor bowl filled with white corroded powder
Major obstacle: the ignition system has been stripped out





It has only 581 km on the clock, there is no carbon on the piston head and no scouring on the piston as viewed through the exhaust port.

This should keep me busy over Christmas.

How is it going with the ignition system and getting this Manet up to showroom floor status?

Finally, the time has come where I am able to update this thread.

So, after a year of trolling spare parts suppliers and Youtube videos, one of the moped suppliers based in the Netherlands came up with a special on the ignition system I required to get the Puchy running, so I got off my ass and started the ball rolling. The only problem was that they do not ship to destinations outside of the EU.

After applying my mind a bit I decided to have the part shipped to a friend in England whose wife would bring it to South Africa when she came to visit her mother over Christmas. However, the courier costs were staggering and he suggested that the part be sent to a friend of his who lived in Rotterdam, and this was duly done at a cost of €50 (R820 plus bank fees of R250... )

I had, in anticipation, been cleaning things up (cleaned the rust out of the tank (frame) by sloshing a liter of Hydrochloric acid around in it) and putting parts back in their rightful places on the frame; re-upholstered seat (R200), two new 16" tubes (R80), new bicycle pedals (R70), cone air filter (R50) and new fuel tubing and in line filter.

The part duly arrived a week ago and I eagerly prepared it to fit it. It had come with an extra lighting coil piggy backed on the light coil for the brake light which I did not need as my model did not come out with brake light, indicators or hooter, so I removed it and cut the mounting bolts shorter as required. I had also needed to buy a woodruff key and it was necessary to machine it down on my drill press to fit.

The original ignition system was a Ducati system using a separate coil, and the new system is a Bosch system with an integral ignition coil (much better, in my opinion) but the Bosch backing plate was half a ball hair wider in diameter to fit in the motor so out came a small fine file to rectify the matter. On went the flywheel and soon the points and timing were set and it was time to test if there was any spark - and voila!

The tank quickly ingested a half liter of 40:1 and with great anticipation I engaged the starter clutch and gave the left hand pedal two kicks on full choke before I realised that I had not connected the Plug lead after installing the spark pug and on the next kick the motor sputtered and purred into life and I took it for a ride around the garden.

However, all was not well, and fuel started pouring out of the carburettor overflow and the next week has been spent fiddling with float levels and other leaks...

To date I have done about 15km around the village and the motor starts easily and runs well up to three quarter throttle where the float problem prevents the high speed carb circuit from getting fuel.

It is amazing how many smiles the bike draws from all races, genders and ages as it buzzes down the road

Fuel tank is 4 liters which gives 200km range...
