Default Nice Places to Ride to

What are some nice places in JHB or surrounding areas to ride to on a Saturday or Sunday to get out on the bike and enjoy the ride and as a bonus at the stop have a great breakfast? We have ridden out to Harties a couple of times, been to the windmill, French toast, the main Engen garage across the bridge (wimpy). Anyone have some other suggestions where a great ride and great breakfast can be enjoyed not too far outside of JHB?

    Seriously?

You can go out Harties way every weekend for a year and literally not go to the same place twice!
    Swiss African
    Amazingwe
    Aviators
    Silver Orange Bistro
    Van Gaalen Cheese farm
    Die Ou Pastorie

and many more pub type places

There are a myriad of roads out that way, well in any direction actually, there is the whole cradle area to explore and if you go a bit further you can include blackhorse brewery and the Brauhaus an Dam or Beestekraal Stasie

you have another 50 places in and around Parys, O's for instance, the airfield, or just before Parys there is the berry farm and then in Vanderbijl there is Stonehaven or the bike museum at Deneysville

There is Val which is out past Balfour & Greylingstad

There are another 5o places out towards Cullinan, a few that are not open on Sunday.

How far do you want to ride on a day? from the Alberton area, Parys, Harties and Cullinan are all roughly a 200km round trip if you just go directly there and back, the back roads are all pretty cool but are not to be taken as racetracks.

Over the past 2 weekends i have breakfasted out Harties way and then gone on to cover a total of just on 1000km of which onlky about 150km max was duplicated roads

and then ...... there are a zillion places with joburg and pretoria to go have brekafast/brunch, there are 3 or 4 "mountain passes" in the jhb suburbs. urban cruising can be a whole bunch of fun.

Aren't the roads there quite treacherous? That's the only reason i've put off going that way el solo without being in a bike group - safety in numbers and all that.

I'll come with, I know they've recently resurfaced a lot of those roads that side.

    Ag nee man!

I really wish the guys would get off the bad roads stuff. The roads are far worse in the towns that out "there" . You just have to remember that our rural roads are not race tracks, the faster you are going the less time you have to identify and react to road condition changes and pedestrians and cows etc

this past weekend, we were a group of 7 bikes and the week before it was me alone. Some of the roads, like the R560 from Harties to the R24 might be a little bumpy for hard sprung superbike but most out there are actually all good, the old road to harties past Hennops is now open after being completely rebuilt. The R24 past magalies to rustenburg carries some traffic and is bumpy in parts.

The R104 from Harties to Rustenburg has some roadworks (scraped surface with some ridges) on it through the township but it is quite rideable

now, the road from Olifantsnek to Derby is 26km of good road, doesn't carry a lot of traffic, you can see quite far most of the time, and is a lot of long sweeps, at 150km/h you are not even really putting in any effort.....

there are a gazilion really lekker roads out there if you have a " I am not Marquez / Rossi" mindset

Here is a gps file of some of the riding I have done over the past few months, I have done 10000km since easter, literally zero commuting

My suggestion is to stop picking destinations, rather pick a direction

I like that saying. Just choose a direction and ride
