Default Just had a gun pointed at me

N3 south just after van buuren. black dude and his buddy in a gunmetal hilux or navara. For no reason other than shaking my head after swerving out for him as he violated my right of way while splitting.

Ek kan slange vang nou. Ek is verskriklik omgekrap.

It was going so wel and I was really starting to enjoy commuting by bike, and now this.

Go to police station. Make a case.

Absolutely shocking behaviour! Wow! Thankfully you are okay.

Just a reminder. You do not have automatic right of way when you lane split. Always be very wide awake.

You have the Registration number go to the police station and report the incident.
Pointing of an firearm is a criminal offence and the police have to investigate the case.

    agreed open a case.

this morning had the biggest knob head skip a stop street then try to knock me over for hooting at him. Then he opens his passenger window to hurl insults etc with his primary school child sitting in the passenger seat, c**t this and f%%k that etc. Point is there are just so many cn%ts out there, and whilst I am not saying be a hero this attitude of everyone doing as they please without the concern of others is taking me to boiling point.

Yeah man, have had that happen to me once, wasn't fazed cause the guys also trying to protect himself, the way some biker react to not been given right of way and such can really shock you:mirrors broken and windows punched in, I guess after a while you build a thick skin and try to send a message to everyone else who seems they might do that.

Go to the police and open a case, chances are that gun is also illegal and you might save a life by getting the guy arrested and that gun confiscated

I Know it is easier said then done but you should not let these kind of incidents make you boil.
That is one of the easiest ways to end up in an accident.
When you lose your temper it distracts you and effects your judgment which impairs your riding ability.
Keep your emotions in check and once you are off the bike go kick a tree if you must and go lay charges against the offender.

I'm not going to lay charges. For one thing, he will just deny it, and I have a suspicion he is a cop... I won't risk my safety or that of my family by virtue of his retaliation or trying to protect himself.

    Karma will get him.

Jhb is such an angry place. Folks have become immune to their irrational and violent outbursts.

To many married men in cars who also own Kugas and Honda motorbikes...

This is not an attack on you personally so please do not take it that way, It remains your choice whether or not you report the incident but here comes the reality of the situation.

Lawlessness in this country is also mostly to blame on this type of attitude. Police can only judge their performance on the statistics they gather.
By not reporting incidents like this, the police van not get this on their stats. Lets say you report this and nothing comes of it ever, it shows on the stats as a unsuccessful case. come end of the financial year and new vehicles, manpower etc needs to be assigned to a certain area, these unsuccessful stats is the determining factor in were more resources need to be directed. Same goes if you do not report a break in at your house or business because you feel it was not big enough or you "don't have insurance anyway". All crimes need to be reported for crime to be combated, police can only combat what they know about.

Ok sorry for the long response and back to your situation, Karma is b.... and I really hopes he does not try it with the wrong person one day for his sake. If he points his firearm at me, he is threatening my life and it is within my right to defend myself, and I always ride with my firearm.

On helmet cams, have a look on takealot, there is few cheap action cams that will do the job just fine if you do not need to make extreme high definition videos. Always good having evidence to back you up.

    PS.
Pointing of a firearm is criminal offence, whether it is a real firearm or even a plastic BB gun.

Once again this is more general info, not a attack on you personally

Talking about pointing a firearm at the wrong person...
Many years ago I had an employee working for me in my factory in Rosslyn.
This guy was a Springbok marksman and took part in many shooting competitions.
He always carried his 45 with him everywhere.
On his way to work one morning in the company bakkie on the Brits road he got into
an altercation with a gentleman is a sporty Jag who then tried to force him off the road
and then proceeded to draw his firearm and point it at my employee in the bakkie.
    Bad MOVE....
My employee then drew his 45 and proceeded to blow the guy away...
They found the gentleman dead in his Jag still with the toy gun in his hand.
It was some type of Pistol Pellet gun thing.
Anyway long story short, My employee walked away with not even being charged.
    Case closed deemed self defense.

Whenever I see people point firearms this incident comes to mind and I think to myself be very careful who you decide to point with a firearm because you just never know...

Enough has been say about the illegality of the gun incident.
The thing that worries me is the so called right of way while splitting. There is no such thing. While splitting unbeknown to many road users is legal it doesn't give any additional rights or priviledges and is only possible with the cooperation of the other road users, but they don't have to move over in any way to give you right of way.

Exactly. It is a courtesy thing. If a cage/bakkie/truck/bus driver gives you a gap by moving over, it is their own choice.

Just a point of order - the incident happened while I was lane splitting home. I was, in fact, alone in the right hand lane when he veered into me.

Must be lost in translation. If you were alone in the lane you were not lane splitting.

Well, at that very moment I wasn't. But I had been 5 seconds before.

Anyway, my take on the matter is, if you are legally overtaking and somebody blocks you off or swerves into you, they are violating your right of way. Right of way doesn't necessarily mean people have to make space for you - it means they have to respect the space you occupy or will occupy, with due consideration for your and their safety, as well as keeping a clear area around their vehicle at all times.
