Unhappy DL650 Rear shock repair / replacement ?? Help guys

    Hey there guys

Im stuck in a bit of a dilemma, I have a K7 Vstrom 650 and I weigh 110kg..I only had the bike for like the last 5000km ... but the previous owner was also my size, so it didn't really help lol.. now the bike has 49k Km on the clock and the shock is done/Finished/leaking/ bouncy bouncy, I am currently looking to replace the shock but I cannot afford a new or aftermarket shock, and I was dumbstruck when I found out that the stock shock is a Sealed unit.. and it looks like pretty old tech.. very sad.. so now I have two options, I can buy a used shock and I dont know what I get (I have sourced one for a good price) , or 2, I managed to track down someone who rebuilds and services shocks, they even rebuild sealed units, they do it in a specialized chamber, the shock gets cut open and stuff replaced, incl nitrogen and oil and seals.. and then the thing is welded shut again.. well at least this is how they explained it to me...

now my question is, before I make a decision... Someone told me that people swap out the DL650 shock for a DL1000 one.. and they fit.. only they are slightly longer which makes for a bit higher ride height.. is this true? I tried to google this and the swopouts but I am not successful.

any advice here would greatly be appreciated guys. thanks

    regards

I don't know much about the OEM shocks so can't advise. Have you tried looking at aftermarket shocks like Ohlins?

How much do they want to recondition your shock? If it's not too expensive then maybe go that route first.

I can get a complete 2nd hand shock from bike hosp for R1500.. But there is no way of telling what cond it is in.. Then I have the option of getting my stock one redone... Only one guy that does it.. Its a sealed unit so they have to cut it. Open and weld it shut... And this will also be in the region of R1500.

Using a DL1000 shock, if a tad longer will only raise the rear end of the bike. This will have an impact on handling. I cannot say whether you would experience this negative or positive.
2nd hand shock: As you say, you have no idea what you get.
Recon: Some do a great job and can even compensate for your weight. Also a bit of a gamble, but it seems like the lesser of the evils at this stage.

BTW, just bad luck. Your size is not that important. I am heavier than that and rode a DL1000 just on 70k km's with no shock hassles.

Have you looked at the Hyper pro or Wilburs suspension options?

I would always go with having a rear shock redone by http://mpcustomvalve.co.za/ rather than a new OEM or a used one.
I send all my clients to him and have never had anything but good feedback.
