    Default Gauteng Toyrun 2015

    Good Morning all,

This year's Toyrun will be my first, and I cannot wait!

    Who else is going?

We'll be leaving from the Blockhouse, and would love to put some faces to names. Also, any advice/do's/don'ts will be appreciated.

Mods, if duplicated or in the wrong section, please do as required. I couldn't a Gauteng Toyrun thread, and I noticed the PTA one was in the Pub as well.

Looks like I'm doing Irene this year, or if friend pulls out Silverstar.

    Irene or Silverstar for me.
Irene I will be "alone", Silverstar I can meet my sister, bro-in-law and nephew and ride with them.

Irene is 10 minutes away, Silverstar is about 50 minutes.

Advice: the speeds are not high but the concertina effect is horrific. Also, some guys don't stay in formation and like to pass; not something you're expecting.

Simple: Ride early to Silverstar. Have chat, hugs and all and then ride back to Irene. Best of both worlds and lots of saddle time.

A good experienced lead bike can lessen the concertina effect with steady riding. The guys that do not stay in formation should go elsewhere...

The problem with toyrun is that about 75% of the riders never ride in a group during the year and the toyrun is the only mass event they take part. They therefore are not used to riding in a group and don't know how to control their speed and position in the group. This is unfortunately the sad truth and something we have to accept when taking part in such events. The best we can do is to be alert of surrounding riders and constant changes in riding conditions and adapt to or avoid them.

Thanks a lot for the replies. guys!

Never thought of the whole not sticking in formo thing.

I'm big into keeping formo when riding with the Mrs, and also on church runs, so we're used to it.

I'll just make sure we both keep a good look out, keep steady, and enjoy it as much as possible.

    Hi all,

A quick question about the route from Silverstar. With the road works on the N14 and a long stretch of single lane. Is this not going be problematic as there will be approx 500 - 1000 bikes?

We will probably see on the day, however, in the past we always only used one lane to allow traffic to pass except for last year when the traffic officers block of the whole highway and we just went with the flow... Besides, the speed is around 80kph to accommodate slower bikes, so should be minimal impact. But we'll have to see....

There have been talks with all the relevant authorities and the road's contractor and all will be in place for the run on Sunday.

Please remember that these events are run under stringent requirements from the local authorities. Besides that the sponsors/organisers cannot afford negative publicity from any incidents along the route. Therefore careful planning is done and if the organisers feel a route is unsafe for the amount of participants they will choose a different route.
