You need to shop around.
There are many factors that influence your insurance premium.
1) Age
2) Accident history
3) How long have you had your license
4) Have you got a learners or full license
How many vehicles have you got insured
5) how long have you had your current history. The longer you stay with an insurance company and build an accident free record the better your premiums will become.
Usually insuring a bike or cage along with household insurance gets you better premiums. Insuring a bike or cage alone will cost a bit more without household insurance.
Just remember that insurance companies share your info. So if you have a bad record the "entire world" will know.

For some there's therapy, for the rest of us there's riding!
I am with Discovery Insure [pause for all the BOOOs to subside].
I pay R124.91 for comprehensive cover on a nominated value of R19 000 (They did not know about my Ricer, so I had to specify a price).
This is on a policy that includes my cage and household contents.
My Excess was R1500 when I started the policy, with them changing things this has gone up to R3000.
But using the rewards of Vitality drive, I can put my rewards into an excess funder account for about 3 months (They double your rewards with this option) and cover the excess value, which means that they cover me without excess....sort of...
Ricers are bikers too!
Since I work at one of SA's largest insurance companies, I kinda know all the ins and outs of insurance.
Thank you Ares for answering my question!!!

My king is insured for 100 000 but had to add household. I pay just under R700 but have zero excess and has claimed twice so i guess its ok
Am with Discovery with everything - house, contents, my daughters little Suzuki car and my SUV as well as my Fazer which is R218 for R35200 book value.
My petrol pay back is about R350 - R400 a month and both cars have Tracker which for me gives me peace of mind in that I can check where my 18 year old is. An added benefit is that C-Track monitor and will despatch an emergency response vehicle in the event of a sudden stop and no restart or response from a cell phone contact. Is supposedly to pick up an accident and respond asap.
Yes Discovery os a little more expensive than others but I am happy with it.

R 120 per month "all cover" fire, accident, theft. (Bike valued for R22 000.)
No claims yet or claim history, over 50 yr's old. (usually percentage of claim.)
Insurance Co. called "Tamsam" You know... Yellow umbrella thing.
Would I refer them?, .... ask only for a quote, by the value of your ride, other items ect.
There is also Hippopotamus, compare quotes.
The Baby Ninja and most of my 'stuff' is with my broker and currently underwritten by Hollard.
Mine is somewhere in line with that, it's also been changed a few times over the years.
Currently it's listed for R26k for R160. Excess is R1k.
I've claimed through my broker a few times and have no complaints, can go slightly cheaper, but I trust them.
My car has a similar ratio (R160 cover for every R1 spent) but the excess on the cars is R3k.
The Jazz is a bit better though - R131k at R591 gives it R222 cover for every R1 spent.
---
I moved my bike to Bikeline to get track cover (if with a track school).
That is R80k cover for R381 and R2k excess. On track there is an additional R3k excess.
That is R200 cover for every R1 spent, which is better than I when it was underwritten by Zurich, and at a much better excess.
No claims so far, so can't comment on that, but Trudi is also friendly and is a biker chick herself, so quite understanding of the logistics.
A few years back when Zurich pushed up my rates and I threw a tizzy, I expressed my intention to move. My broker agreed and got me a new package, but I did get a good quote from Santam. Was about 10% lower than my new agreedment at the broker, but came with a few extra excess conditions over the first few months that I wasn't quite comfortable with at the time.
Eish. Time to shop around again. Dial Direct insist on R3000 excess on a R28000 scooter. Claim free since 1988, 50 years old, live in a relatively crime free area, etc. I think my combined payment is just under R300. 😠
Worth mentioning to this is when traveling "outside" South Africa. The fine print clearly state "no recovery outside SA" and the clauses within one would require a additional insurance when traveling cross border. This can be done for a specific route and worth the money, but obviously not as permanent arrangement. Many tourists took on Nam or Botswana without taking note of this and found themselves with a problem and the insurance company not interested in the claim. Also look at life insurance and it's clauses when traveling outside SA. These day's even Namibia is excluded from many budget insurance offers.
I actually think Outsurance and Dial Direct dont want motorcycle business, hence the high rates and excesses....
