    Default DIY Cellphone/Ipod/GPS mount

Ok, so RAM mounts are expensive, unsightly, use a lot of space etc. Instead of doing things the easy way and buying a standard solution I had to go try my hand at a DIY custom solution. Now I am no real handy man and generally speaking I just rather pay people to do things, but every now and ten I just have to do something myself.

With a recently installed com system on the VFR I suddenly sat with the question, Where to mount my toys? I wanted something that worked well but could still easily be removed without leaving a big presence.

So here is my solution using a mixture of modified pre purchased and custom made parts.

The custom made mounting bracket made in a local engineering works (more on this later).

My first criteria is met. It is not unsightly when not in use.
A cheap cellphone mount that had a suction cup on it before it met my hacksaw.

Attention to detail is the name of the game and although the fit was very snug to start with, an allenkey bolt secures it beyond any doubt.

The unit rotates to hold the smaller Ipod Nano securely.

In standard configuration the cellphone has a very secure and snug fit.

And in this position it will serve for the future toy to come.

I feel pretty chuffed with my first true effort, maybe skinny can become a distributor.

Thanks for the compliments. Interestingly enough nobody has remarked on my one HUGE oversight in this little project. I made the unit for the wrong side of the bike. The next one I make will be for the left handle bar, making it way easier to control things.

Wouldnt it just be easier to move the go-faster grip to the other side????

very nice job, have been playing with the idea of doing something similar, this has given me some great ideas... thanks...

If it can work for my Sony Ericsson Xperia I'll take one straight from the Inventor!

    PS. I'm serious.

I'm currently treying to find an engineering works that will manufacture it cheaper. The current unit on my bike was turned on a lathe by hand. Possibly it will become cheaper if it can be CNC'd. I will keep you guys informed.

The silver part that attaches to the bike is R250. The phone mounting will depend on where you buy it. I got mine from a flea market for R100 but a Nokia original will cost you R400 (yet they look and work the same). I hope to get manufacturing costs below R150, but I will only know once I have spoken to an engineering works with a CNC lathe.

It will protrude from the top of the holder but should still sit very snug and tight
