One of our members has taken up the challenge of creating awareness around men's health by starting his own team here (http://za.movember.com/team/964025) It's not just men who should and can take part, the challenge is to raise funds to create awareness and education around male specific health problems, such as prostate and testicular cancer, mental health (which deals with living with and beyond cancer therapy). Read more about the initiative here (http://za.movember.com/programs).

Think Bike is committed to supporting the initiative and will be organising an event on 30 November, so keep your eyes on this thread for more information!

:salute: :notworthy: Thanks! That would be awesome! Thanks (again)!

Easiest way is to join the website self, and join the team as a Mo' Sista'. Then you log on to za.movember.com, and click on "Donate:" on the top right of the page, follow the instructions and there you go. You can do one donation at the end of the month, or update as and when you feel like it. It's up to you.

The first one yes, because it's so colourful you see (you need to add cranberries or pomegranate for the red and sweet side). The dessert is chocolate of course - either a chocolate-salt-caramel-pistachio tart, or a slice of moist chocolate cake with my lemon or orange curd slathered on top.

OK, this IS the Movember fred which we've just successfully jacked

How does one proceed with cash/EFT donations? Should members make it to the "Think Bike" team or individually to Movember?

What is preferable to you?

I find it is easier for folks to either pay on the website: http://za.movember.com/donate/ (http://za.movember.com/donate/find-results/) search for me or my team (Think Bike) and follow the instructions, or pay me cash, and then I donate on the website to myself. There is a secure online credit card payment facility you could make use of.

Thanks. I did register and checked out all the options. Perhaps my question should`ve been stated more clearly. If I`m correct, as a donor I can either eft direct to Mo`, eft direct to Mo` under reference "to myself" or direct to Mo` under ref " to Think Bike team", or even eft Mo` direct with donation "to you".... Assuming someone wants to make a donation to (on behalf of) the "Mo`TB team", then he would have an option to split donation equally amongst members of Mo` TB team, or to a particular member ? Thus the reason for my question: what would the team prefer? If no preference, no worries.

Ah, Now I understand better.

I reason like this: If someone out of their own accord would like to donate, it's their prerogative. If you, however, convince someone to donate, and they ask for your preference, I say let them donate to you, since you are the one who made the donation happen. It will automatically be added to the combined team effort, but your standing within the team will increase. And there is nothing wrong with a bit of internal competition to motivate everyone to keep fundraising.

But, it's your choice. There is no preference other than increasing the team's general standing globally (for marketing purposes :wink1:). Whether you split it equally to all the members, or just yourself, it will be pooled to the team. As long as you don't donate to "Mo", but the team, all is good.

Movember should only be moustaches. Beards are cheating since they're fashionable these days.

The opposite of what your facial hair status is should apply. Clean shaven? Grow a tache. Beard? Shave it off.

Right, so I'm going to put some of my goodies up for auction. Will also post this on the team page (http://za.movember.com/team/964025). Bids to be done on the team page ONLY as there are team members not on this Forum :thumbright: That way it will also be public and the proceeds and donation can be "audited".

French Onion Marmalade 250ml - R25
Beetroot Relish 500ml - R40
Sweet Onion Marmalade 250ml - R25
Cucumber & Carrot Pickles 750ml - R50
Sauerkraut 250ml - R30
Cranberry and Almond Biscotti 500g - R75
Scottish Shortbread 500g - R55
TOTAL VALUE: R300

I'm putting a reserve price of R350 on the lot. If the winning bid is from a person outside of personal delivery distance, I will carry the cost of postage as well. If the package is a gift to somebody else, I will package them in the appropriate way and deliver to the receiver.

Entire bid amount will be donated to the team.

Well, 6 October sees the close of the auction, so let's put that as the next date with say.... R1000 as the target? Eleven days to go, surely we can reach that?

I'm working on two ideas for another (totally different) auction so let's see how this one goes?

I don't think there is a deadline for actual donations, but it won't be added to the point standing if it's done after 30 November.

Is 30 November on the Mo` site?

Maybe link your profile to your FB or the TB Facebook or ask peeps on the forum to sponsor you or the team, every R1 helps? :thumbright:

The team which is behind us (and who was leading up to today), has total donations of R2,800 to date and ONLY 10 members! That means that per capita, they have donated more, i.e. R280 per member. We are 31 members with R3,400 which is R109.68 per member.

If we get to R1,000 for the auction (as we stand right now with our donations and members) we can increase the per capita amount to R141.94, still only half of their amount :wha:

Any ideas?

I`ve sent out emails to several well-heeled individuals with a request to sponsor the team or each member thereof, depending on size of donation. (unfortunately I`m struggling to create a link to our Mo`team page on emails) If time permits for the organisation, we can even organise a ride later in November, perhaps using the TB FB if allowed to do so? The Mo` site also allows us to post "events".

What about somewhere towards the end of movember, combining a banner day, with Movember, and seeing if people at the lights would be willing to cough up some dough towards Movember?? Or maybe setting up a day with a few TB folks at i.e. Menlyn Mall, or Sandton, in the parking lot?? Just a thought......

:notworthy:

I had a look at the official events happening and there's one planned for 30 November (http://za.movember.com/events/view-official-event/id/55). As our date is not cast in stone yet we can make it the weekend before. My original thought was to have a ride with Club 100 (has to be a Saturday, it's Toy Run the Sunday) and then have a "shave-a-thon" at the end venue, but if the guys want to attend the Gala then they can't shave. 30 November would have been ideal for the shave-a-thon :wha:

The problem we have with the whole of November is that we have marshalling events every weekend. The only weekend open right now is 9/10. It doesn't mean that the rest of you can't do something, it's just that many of the Movember team are Marshals so will therefore not be able to attend the event :dontknow:

It's a challenge but I'm sure we can deal with it :thumbright:

Sorry for being quiet recently. Work is getting in the way.

I like the idea of the ride with the cyclists (I MIGHT be able to participate, if I can get my cycle fixed by then), and the Shave-a-thon thereafter. For those who want to attend the gala-event, they can participate in the ride, and then they watch and video\photograph the others shaving? :dontknow: I would also prefer the last weekend in November...

The GP/Western Cape Toyruns are happening on Sunday, 24th November. I presume the Carousel (Limpopo) Toyrun would also happen on this date like it happened in the past. The Mo`Pretoria Gala Parte is happening on Wednesday evening, the 27th November at Stones, Centurion. This could be an alternative event to attend (with hair), which leaves the 30th open to do the shave-a-thon?

So a Question to the Collective: When do we start growing our soup strainers? Only in November or before?

According to the "rules", everybody (the men of course) starts on 1 November with a clean shaven mug (take pic) and then shave at the end of the month. I've seen progress pics of guys during the month as well. The idea is for people to ask you about your effort and then you talk to them about the campaign's aim - an easy way to get the conversation going.

Yes, we're planning something for the 30th but there will be an announcement. There is also the Gala in Pretoria on Wednesday 27th and we want to combine all the events in one long event that week.

And no, we don't wreck mirrors :violent1:

I've just posted the following on the Mo Team page:
To add to the basket, I will send a list of products to the successful bidder and he can choose any product(s) to the value of R200 which I will then add to the hamper. This makes my contribution to the auction R500 in total. Not a bad deal, don't you think?

If any of you want to bid anonymously (I've had inquiries about that option) then we can do that too. I will number each anonymous bidder and post the bids against that number on the team page. The successful bidder can then donate the amount anonymously on the site.

The standard slogan of Movember is:".. Changing the Face of Men`s Health."
The Think Bike 2013 team presently uses this slogan as a default.
Since it is a well established fact that TB`ers are a mouthy lot, let`s have a competition to build our own team slogan. It can be witty, funny or serious, but it should be relevant to the subject matter and be acceptable in the public domain. Also, it must be original, no plagiarism from internet or elsewhere. Open for team members, so if you want to compete, just join the team 1st. Easy peasy. Are there team members on Mo` page not involved here? Is so, let`s establish rules here and run this also on our team page.
I`ll get a sponsor for this. Donations will be "credited" to each of 3 winning team members.
-R 400 to winner;
-R 200 for 2nd place
-R 100 for bronze.

Let`s run it for say 10 days?

How do we decide on winning entries? By separate vote fred, with team captain having a veto?
Any other ideas?

My "quick reply" functions such as paragraph break/ font/colour/bold,etc has gone south for more than 10 months now and I must continually save/ "go advanced/"switch editor to source" in order to post anything using those functions...(really frustrating, I must add.)

:director: Time is starting to get few and we need to finalise what we're going to do for 30 November. Are there any other ideas out there? So far the thought is for us to have a ride, stop at a particular venue and do a shave-a-thon. I have a few concerns about this so will appreciate your input :thumbright:

Hi hh, while I don't have an alternative, why don't you voice your concerns so thay can be discussed and either worked around or dismissed but at least they'll be in the open.

My suggestion is to do a ride and ask participants ( and others) for a donation towards the Movember team. Say R 50 bucks per entrant. Captain can post it on TB FB and forum? If the shave-a-thon is the practical concern, why not just leave it out? Or replace it with a pic of before and after? A ride, I surmise, can`t be the problem. This takes one to put a leg over your bike and point it in the general direction of the starting point? So all we really need is a starting point and a route? And hopefully good riding weather.

Even if only a small number of peeps can make it, then so be it. Captain can also post the ride on Mo`vember events board. A small start is always better than a no-start, and maybe it can grow into a bigger event in future, if one wills it to happen.

OK, my main concern with the suggested event is the history of no-shows - it's all excitement until the day arrives for actual commitment (unless cheap and copious amounts of alcohol is offered). Our food runs are one thing, this is a bigger and more important event than our social get-togethers. If we don't have absolute and 100% commitment from our entire Movember team firstly, and secondly from the co-opted/invited attendees we are going to have a dismal event. Am I being negative? I just look at the history of this thread and the Movember team page - all excitement and then things just died down. Only nine votes on the slogan poll. I posted on the 14th that I would be away and only three posts of any substance since then and now? Also, as some of you might have noticed, I'm not a man so I took this on because I was involved in a female cancer awareness drive and thought it time to get involved in this one. Was I wrong? As far as I'm concerned this is a team effort, not mine alone. We can only succeed if we all pitch in and create awareness and excitement about this initiative. This is a male health awareness issue and so far I haven't seen any substantial involvement from any male team members - an invite by Pirate to Mark Pilgrim (no feedback) and emails to business contacts by Aquaman (no feedback). We've had some wonderful donations and then that also stagnated. There was a wave of new team members which has also gone quiet. The idea with this awareness drive is that AWARENESS is created by the males involved, not just joking around on this thread.

If we're going to go to the effort of organising a venue and advertising all over the place for the ride and shave-a-thon, then we need to know that we will have more than three participants. I'm not overly fond of having egg on my face.

It is a major valid concern, we see it on a lot of commitment lists here on the forum, People either cancel at the last minute or don't pitch and maybe apologize after the fact. Yes I know we are all volunteers, Yes I know important emergencies come up but the ratio of cancellations/no-shows seems very high in my mind. I would rather not put my name down till I'm 100% certain that I can do something then having to cancel.

Another good example is this 24hr race marshaling, great enthusiasm initially, now the cancellations are coming in as well as only a small number putting their name down for the training.

We're at the end of the year and people are tired - we see it every year. But should we not have a Red Bull and give it a last push to finish this year on a high note?

@ HH. I hear what you say. Some of the contents of your statement are well deserved, others perhaps less so. :wink2:

Let me start firstly by thanking you for your positive inputs, energy and for keeping us in line. :headbang:

Let me also thank every person that has donated moneys to the team`s donation drive.

As I`ve been specifically addressed in your statement, seemingly as one of the addressed "males" who, if not already a lifer, should find themselves a long term lease in the proverbial dogbox, :roll3: viz: " I haven't seen any substantial involvement from any male team members - an invite by Pirate to Mark Pilgrim (no feedback) and emails to business contacts by Aquaman (no feedback)." , I guess it requires an answer.

So here is my feedback. Firstly, my apologies for not living up to my own slogan. It seems that I`ve yet to suffer mildly for this cause in order for fewer people (patients) to suffer gravely. Unfortunately, I`ve so far raised only R 1,700.00, with vague promises of more moola to come. R 1,000.00 has already been donated to the team, per anonymous donation. Another R 700 is being earmarked for the slogan competition; poorly supported as it were.. Some of the addressed donors did come back with the usual thank you, but what are you planning...specifically? I cannot at this stage give them any clearer indication, except to say that I anticipate a limited number of bikers (perhaps 20-30) who will go and ride and shave their faces/craniums. Please also bear in mind that I`ve had recent commitments to the DGR and Bandana day, to name a few...which took up a bit of time and donations. End of feedback.
I suggest we pick a committee of volunteers that can put a "package" together. But that would mean that we must first be "unleashed" from the dogbox...? Any volunteers?

Yes, because a statement of commitment was made. If anybody else made commitments I would have mentioned them too.

So here is my feedback. ......End of feedback.

Money is wonderful, but I was also talking of physical activity. Movember is an awareness campaign which targets male health issues and the aim of growing facial decorations is a way of raising that awareness. The growing of such hair is so that it would start conversations around the target of the campaign (to paraphrase Movember). The raising of funds is one thing, physical involvement and commitment an entirely different thing. If the team members have been involved in one way or another then it would be wonderful if feedback is given, otherwise nobody knows it was done. The people you have that may become contributors or involved in some way - what do they need to seal the deal?

I had asked for volunteers before - Pirate being the class captain was an automatic add and Richieacc the only other one who put up his hand. So, next step?

If the decision is "do nothing", then we take that decision. But a decision needs to be made and because we're 46 strong, that decision needs to come from the team (or majority), not from one person alone.

HH's concerns are valid, especially when it regards me (being team captain and all). Allow me to apologize for being "invisible"?

I was waiting for response from Club 100 before starting to plan a route (and as I am a cager, I have no idea what a cool route would be. I can suggest a starting point, but being new(-ish) in GP also limits my knowledge of good venues, I need knowledgeable input from those in the know, like those who ride a bike in GP more than once in a fortnight).

So it seems we cannot get a commitment from them (Hover, please correct me if I'm wrong), and I am hesitant to propose the motion that we continue for the planning of the shave-a-thon on the 30th without them, since they possibly think that the 30th is still a month away?

But, I agree that Movember is from Friday onwards, and venues would be getting booked. We should start thinking about the closing\ending venues, as space might become a problem.

As far as I am aware, most work (awareness making, etc.) goes on during the month, and that is when the most of the fund-raising is being done. I think we should start to consider possible starting and ending venues and start talking to them. I know Hover had some ideas, and I will take it up with her.

Regarding Mark Pilgrim, I have sent him a follow-up email and have not yet received feedback.

As for creating awareness, I shall be starting my Movember-related spam on facebook and twitter before the end of the week :wink1:(for those who don't know, there is a link in your mospace that says "ask for donations" and then you can choose how, ie twitter, email or facebook). I don't know who does the Think Bike facebook or twitter pages, perhaps they can post this link: https://www.movember.com/za/donate/payment/team_id/964025

Something else to consider regarding the venues is that companies are booking their year-end functions as well. I think it's becoming quite urgent that we make a commitment before we run out of time.

Again, I'd like to reiterate, that if you need something done, call on me :)

OK, so I haven't been around much lately, mainly coz I'm sitting on my **** at home and don't have 'free' internet as long as I'm booked off from work. So here's my 2c worth: I signed up to grow fuzz on my face and thereby start conversations about cancer awareness. I've asked people to support the cause any way they can, be it donations (which seems like asking people to donate kidneys in this financial climate) or just to be 'aware' of the fact that guys get cancer too. As for the ride thing: I don't have a bike anymore, won't be getting another one for a long time and probably won't be able to attend a 'ride' anyway coz I'm only expecting to be walking and driving sometime in December. I know I'm a 'sthpethial case' but I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that the expectations are outgrowing the initial commitment and 'spirit' in which I got involved in this in the first place.

(By the way, my fellow "males", Bactroban works best for bite marks on one`s ass...)
I've found that Supiroban is working well for my roasties...

In terms of "the ride", we have a few bikeless team members and I will make sure those who are in cages will be part of the proceedings. In terms of being "thpethial" - we all are :tongue3:

Seriously.... awareness is what it's all about. Cancer is something people think happens to other people, not to them. Creating that awareness around male specific cancers is what this is all about. Many males don't want to go for their prostate exams and often they go too late. So starting conversations and getting men to be more aware of the essential nature of exams is going a long way towards that goal. I've said before that this is not all about money, it's about getting involved physically in the cause. But if nobody says what they've been doing then it's like blowing a kiss to somebody in the dark.

On the Mo`vember site you are requested to speak to family and friends about prostate cancer, and if you did, you may claim the Health badge thinghy. I`ve circulated a notice to my male staff and to the odd 78 specialists on labour broking contracts, and to some friends and clients. I sent it also to those members of my extended family who are still talking to me. At least that one was quick and easy.
I can also help with some organisation. Let`s do what we enjoy and go ride somewhere.
1) We can do suburbia, but experience shows some peeps may lose the group;
2) We can do an outride to a nice place, there are many around Magaliesburg, Hekpoort, Cullinan, or close to the Vaal.
3) We can invite the other groups on the Mo`vember site to tag along. Meet them somewhere for a brekkie.. Maybe hold an auction of sorts. Something along the lines of any member in audience bids on another person to shave. Shavee can either shave or outbid to keep his/her hair?
Should we perhaps start a fred and see who would want to participate on the ride? I believe we`ve done a poll, but not yet established the actual participants. My idea on this is simplistic. Even if only a few peeps want to go ride; let`s do it.
Also go and rate your fellow team members on the site. If a person gets 5/5 votes, their profile and our team profile move up in the ratings.

Let me be the first, as always, to say that I am completely lost. (and I'm still unable to use my enter key anyway....) I have arranged to make a donation on Friday and will twist Alex's arm to do it on my behalf (well his too) and further than that, I have offered support, have not been asked to do anything though... @ Seerower, might I suggest that you come in contact with Boesman whom had a very successful shaveathon in February this year at Centurion Lifestyle Centre. He might have a couple of pointers to make it easier and less complicated
