2012 was an exciting year for South African racers on the world championship circuits. This year will be even more exciting. Let us support our boys doing battle with the best in the world during 2013. We don't all nail ourselves to the TV when MotoGP or WSBK is on, but let us go and "like" their Facebook pages, etc.

Darryn Binder - Red Bull Rookies Cup:

Darryn is 14 years old and after failing by a hair's width during 2012, qualified to ride in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, the development class for MotoGP. The next logical step is Moto3 in which his older brother competed last year and will be again this year. Red Bull Rookies Cup all race identical 250, single cylinder 250 Moto3 bikes. Sadly Darren crashed and broke his arm during testing recently and will miss the first race of the season. Due to him racing in South Africa in NRR the TB Scrutineers have met him and his dad. Very nice people, who are truly working super hard to get to the top of the sport.

Brad Binder - MotoGP, Moto3 Class:

Brad, at 17, is Darryn's older brother. He raced in the MotoGP series, Moto3 class last year and suffered more bad luck than any racer should have to. Although he had some good races, he also had some terrible ones and never made the podium, but came close a time or two. He was snapped up by one of the better teams for the 2013 season. They entered him into the last race of the Spanish Championships in 2012, where he won going away. During the past weekend's testing at Jerez, he hovered in the top ten fastest riders.

Steven Odendaal - MotoGP, Moto2 Class:

Steven is well know in South African racing circles as well. He got a few "wild card" rides in Moto2 last year, but will race a full season in Moto 2 this year. He didn't do great, but he did not lose either. He will be racing for a Spanish team this year, with what looks like a decent bike.

http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2013/ArgianoGins+Racing+with+Speed+Up

Sheridan Morias - WSBK, Supersport 600 Class:

Sheridan raced for the Kawasaki Team during 2012 and finished 6th in the World Championships. He missed podiums, but if we consider he raced on a shoe string budget, 6th overall is an excellent result. He will be racing for the top Honda team this year.

Matthew Scholtz - WSBK, Supersport 600 Class:

Matthew who learned his racing in Spain, raced in this class during 2012. He rode a Honda, but managed to throw it off the track, more often than not. He tried to hard on a slower bike. During 2011 he competed in Moto 2 and, like Darryn Binder and Brad Binder started his world racing career in the Red Bull Rookies Cup. This year, after many years, Suzuki will be making a comeback to Supersport 600 racing and the team selected Matthew to ride one of their bikes.

David McFadden - WSBK, Superstock 1000 Class:

David is one of the fast ones in SA Superbikes, earning him the nickname McFlash. He is making his debut in the WSBK, Superstock 1000 Class with the Ten Kate Honda Junior Team. The breeding ground Ten Kate uses to prepare younger riders for full WSBK racing.

Greg Gildenhuys - WSBK, Superstock 1000 Class:

Greg was the first to race a BMW S1000RR in South Africa and won the championship on that in 2010. During 2012, while winning the SA Championship again, he raced a Kawasaki in the WSBK, Superstock 1000 with some mixed results. No top places, but impressive enough that the BMW Goldbet Factory Team signed him up to partner with Sylvain Barrier, current WSBK, Superstock 1000 Champion. The all new Italian driven BMW Superbike team is going all out to bring the championship for both WSBK, Superbikes and WSBK, Superstock 1000 home to Germany ... via Italy and as such Sylvain and Greg will ride the new S1000RR HP4 machines in the Superstock 1000 Class.

Allan-Jon Venter - Isle of Man (Superbike, Superstock and Senior Classes:

AJ is the son of André venter, Technical Consultant for NRR, so the TB Scrutineers know Mom, Dad, sis and AJ well. A really nice kid, with incredible riding skills. Due to a lack of finances he is not racing in the British Superbike season this year. He did a once off ride in SA National Racing in Cape Town last week. Started last on the grid as there was no qualifying due to rain and he doesn't have any championsip points. He fought his way to 7th in the first race and 4th in the second. No too shabby. You need some training? Talk to him about some one-on-one stuff at Red Star.

A high5 from my side to the local guys doing well. It's always good to see Saffers getting onto the international circuit.

Though not quite there yet, a friend of mine from Johannesburg is racing in the Formula3 circuit in Europe and has pretty good chances of getting into Formula1 if he keeps up with his results.

Wasnt a great weekend for the Saffers.........

Sadly, no. The Top 20's by Matthew Scholtz and Dave McFadden is not too bad, but they should be able to do better, especially Dave who is on a Ten Kate Team bike. I cannot believe a factory BMW (Greg Gildenhuys) is out, second time in two races on a relatively simple mechanical failure.

The MotoGP series is in Jerez in Spain this weekend. After Free practise two the Yamahas are ruling the roost and qualifying tomorrow will be interesting. My thumbs are, as always, held for Rossi in MotoGP, but more importantly:

Darryn Binder #40, Red Bull Rookiex Cup - Qualified 11th on the grid.
Brad binder #41, Moto3 - 5th fastest after Free Practise 2.
Steven Odendaal #44, Moto 2 - 22nd after Free Practise 2.

Well done boys!

#40 Darryn Binder, Rookies Cup: 10th and an unfortunate DNF (blown engine while fighting for third) in race 2.
#44 Steven Odendaal, Moto2: 22nd.
#41 Brad Binder, Moto3: 4th

Brad is now 6th in the championship and clearly the Nr 1 Honda engine user. His 4th spot on th egrid was the best for a Saffer since Mario Rademeyer on Kyalami in 1985.

In Moto 2, it can never be "only" 22nd. The competition in this class is super strong. Also, consider he qualified 29th and thus made up 7 places during the race. He battled with, amongst others, Sandro Cortese who finished 19th, a past World Champion. So, agreed Dave, even though 22nd doesn't look like much, in a Moto 2 field, first full year for Steven, he is doing exceptionally well. Personally I am expecting to see quite a few top 20's from him as the season progresses. Something that I like about him is, three races = three finishes. We so often see talented riders batling for 20th, falling off race after race because they ride away from their heads. Case in point is Louis Rossi who finished 23rd behind Steven. Last year he finished 11th in the championship, but DNF 7 of the 17 races!

Hats off to these boys. McFadden struggled to get a decent bike. Started the season with a Ten Kate Honda which seemed below spec. Managed a ride on a Kawa at Monza which was 20km/h down on top speed. Started this race on a privately entered Beemer and did a great 8th.

They are doing well. I had a long chat with Darryn Binder on Saturday. To give you some idea, he entered the 600 Supersport Class in NRR and ran a 2nd and 4th place giving him 3rd overall. This after almost no practise orpreperation and precious little experience on a 600. He also entered the Moto3 class on a older 125GP bike and ran a 2nd and 1st place. He is bloody good. In the Red Bull Rookies Cup he runs in the upper 5 positions and tells me the competition is tougher than he ever expected. A different world.

When we see them doing a 5th, or even 10th place we forget that it is against the best in the world, riders and technology wise. My hat goes off to all the guys battling hard to make a name in world class racing.

Jip, love talking to the riders.

I was amazed when Sheridan told me that his contract states that he is not allowed to commute on a bike at all.

Which makes sense if you think about it.

SO, this weekend we see a record number of South Africans in world class racing. It seems the new Mahindra is working for Brad Binder and he must be a happy chappy because Ambrogio Racing, his team, told Honda to shove their bikes. After Moto 3, Free Practise 2, Brad is 5th fastest. Steven Odendaal in Moto 2 is 23 fastest after Free Practise 1.

At World Superbikes, the four Saffers all competing in the 600 Supersport Class is having some mixed fortunes after Free Practise 1:

#17 Ronan Quarmby is 13th.
#20 Mathew Scholtz is 17th.
#32 Sheridan Morias is 21st
#69 David McFadden is 32nd. (Keep in mind this is his first outing in the class and probably his first ride on a 600 in two years)

Mixed bag of results, but in general, not the best we have had.

#40 Darryn Binder, Red Bull Rookies Cup, KTM: Started 12th, finished 5th. Nice one Darryn!
#41 Brad Binder, Moto3, Mahindra: Started 28th after TERRIBLE qualifying, finished 18th after running 16th for awhile. Disapointing, especially after being 5th fastest in the free practise sessions.
#44 Steven Odendaal, Moto 2, SpeedUp: Started 23rd, finished 23rd. Top 20 spot still eluding him.
#32 Sheridan Morias, Supersport 600, Kawasaki ZX6: Started 17th, did not finish. Blown engine.
#69 Dave McFadden, Supersport 600, Honda CBR600: Started 30th, finished 24th.
#20 Michael Scholtz, Supersport 600, Suzuki GSXR600: Started 21st, finished 17th.
#17 Ronan Quarmby, Supersport 600, Honda CBR600: Started 20th, finished 10th.

Yes, indeed you did miss something. Sheridan moved from the PTR Honda team to the Goeleven Kawasaki team, taking the place of Andrea Antonelli who died recently. Sunday's race was Sheridan's second race on the Kawasaki. His place in the PTR Honda team was taken by Dave McFadden.

Yep. Struggling big time. He did better last year with less financial support. This year must be a personal nightmare for him.

Not sure what happened, but yeah, I think he left because he was supposed to be the PTR #1 rider and he never was.

The MotoGP tour goes to Aragon in Spain this weekend. News is that the premium class bikes, on the latest tire technology have surpassed the previous 62 degrees lean angle as some are managing 64 degrees. Piccie below is Lorenzo's bike, displayed on a side stand that allows it to lean at 64 degrees. A tad mad,if you ask me, but hey, what do I know?

Our boys at Aragon this weekend:

#40 Darryn Binder, KTM in the Red Bull Rookies Cup. Currently 11 fastest after FP1.
#41 Brad Binder, Mahindra in Moto3. Currently 12 fastest after FP1.
#44 Steven Odendaal, SpeedUp in Moto2. No runs yet.

World Superbikes from Magny Cours in France. Not great results for the Saf-boys, except Sheridan Morias.

World Superstock 1000: Greg Gildenhuys, BMW S1000RR HP4, crashed into a falling rider in front of him. DNF.
World Supersport: Sheridan Morias, Kawasaki ZX6, well deserved 5th place. If race wasn't red flagged at a late stage, 4th may have been on the cards.
World Supersport: Mathew Scholtz, Suzuki GSXR600, crashed out. DNF.
World Supersport: Ronan Quarmby, Honda CBR600RR, started well, but engin eproblems caused him to go backwards in the pack. 17th.

Indeed. For most of us, that lean angle is achieved after a crash!

This weekend will be super exciting, indeed!

The World Superbike Series at Jerez in Spain, so Shez, Greg, Ronan and Mathew will be in action, while down under in the MotoGP series Brad and Steven will be at it again. It seems that they are slowly, but surely getting Brad's Mahindra up to spec and they solved the issue that robbed Shez's Kawa from power. Looks like a cool weekend to come.

News is that Brad will ride the Mahindra for Ambrogio Racing in Moto 3 during 2014 and then Ambrogio will enter Moto 2 with Brad as their rider. Ambrogio Racing is a well established team and I reckon a two year contract with them is a great thing for Brad. They have won two World Championships since they started in 2000. Some riders that came through the Ambrogio Racing ranks are:

Andrea Ianone
Gabor Talmasci
Jonas Folger
Marco Simoncelli

The rest of SA's are struggling to get contracts, so confirmed news so far for 2014.

Darryn Binder - Red Bull Rookies Cup (2nd year - did well enough this year to be invited for 2014)
Hanno van Rooyen - Red Bull Rookies Cup (1st year - just qualified)
Brad Binder - Moto 3
