Russel's funeral will be at Quigney Baptist Church in East London on Thursday 28th, 14:00 for any down here who wish to attend. I've found out that he'd only had the bike for a week or so before the accident. I'll forward all of the condolences & support posted here to the family. Thanks to all for your support for a fallen fellow biker.

This incident adds urgency to a planned schools rider safety visit. Any of you Gauteng'ers who've done ATGATT visits - your advice & experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again to all who posted condolences. A copy was given to Russel's parents at the funeral today, & they were touched by the fact that so many responses came from people who'd never known him. That's the biking community for you. They've also been told how to find this thread for themselves.

RIP Russell,

Anybody know why a stationary Police vehicle has no lights, hazards, flashers???

Pirate it sounds like it was just one of those things that sadly happen. The police van had paused for oncoming traffic so that it could make a right turn into a side road. Russel had passed a car which had pulled into the yellow for him (on a downhill road). He may have been affected by the glare of the sun - common issue on that stretch at that time. Struck the van a glancing blow which threw him into the path of the car.

Without having been on the scene (a friend was just afterwards) I can only speculate on what various parties have said. From the sound of it, it was just a tragic accident.
