So I am ready to move with something here, but don't know where to start ? I've got stickers and flyers from Amid, so do I just do the bikeshops, get the names of MCC's or what? Then can somebody come and help with presentations & can I get names of TB members in the FS? How many MCC members justify a presentation? I can do Eastern FS up to Welkom but not Bloemfontein - close to 300km away. I was also thinking it could be a good idea to do something BIG in Welkom, since it's the town that robbed TB of Bucc :evil:. My mom stays in Hennenman which is close by, I drive in Welkom regularly with cage and must say the roadside manners are UTS :protest:. Maybe the bike fanatics at Phakisa are not the right target market there. I can get MCC names in Harrismith, Bethlehem, Kroonstad, Senekal, Welkom if that will help. What do you think about targeting bike shops in the smaller towns? Imagine TB info can be given to new bike buyers, the guys in small towns often do not belong to MCC's?

Start with the bikers and clubs that you know. Get them involved and ten you can take over the whole of freestate. Get one or two disciples and they get one or two and so it just grows exponentially:salute::salute:

I would also suggest the local bike shops, leave a few pamphlets and stickers with them, but make sure the shop owner leaves them on the counter and not in a drawer where no one can see the stuff:?

Good luck:thumbleft:

Our ideal is to do a roadshow to the Free State. Do a TiTTS presentation at one or two schools on a Friday morning, visit the bike shops and then meet with the local MCCs Friday evening at a social function and do a presentation.

If only we did not all have day jobs... :?

Ek gaan hierdie Saterdag Bethlehem se bike shops doen, het mos nou my example bib.

Absolutely!

I think we ride through to Bloemfontein Thursday afternoon, do one or two TiTTS presentations there Friday morning and then ride through to Kestell after lunch.

Stop by the memorial on the way to Bethlehem, see a couple of biker-types there and then head to the Knox residence?

I can drive to Hennenman on Thursday eve, visit ouma & sleep over & maybe meet you at Ventersburg on route from Bloemf. From there Senekal, cross site, Paul Roux, Bethlehem. Just tell me what time I have to arrange for Bethlehem MCC's. You'll need to tell me how many people will be coming down closer to the time. I have 3 bedr avail but can organise some more mattrasses cause the place is huge. There's also B & B and backpackers in Kestell. Clarens is also just around the bend. It will be shorter from Bfn to Bhm to go via Winburg, so meet us in Senekal.
Will check with WD on the updated TiTTS presentation and then start arranging times etc.

Maybe the bike fanatics at Phakisa are not the right target market there

Don't know :?
This weekend Regional racing at Phakisa. Packed to the brim. Better atmosphere than National racing.

Get all the riders to put TB stickers on.(great marketing) Remember these guys spend Loads of money on their racing. A lot of dealers represented.

Potentially a lot of sponsors.

Come and say hi to us

Thanks Catman. I first want to see how I can rev things up here in the Eastern suburbs and then move to Goldfields. Bloem will be last stop, because it's faaaaaar away - About 300km from me - same for me as doin TB in Jozie; then I'd rather move into Kwazulu Ladysmith & Midlands. But I would like his details anyway - Perhaps he knows about MCC's in Wellkom / Goldfields - I often go there for weekends and it's not so far from Bloem; perhaps he'll be prepared to come and help me there one weekend. So this morning I drive to work from Kestell to Qwa Qwa. Thick mist all the way. As I'm coming into Qwa Qwa I notice bright yellow on the bumper up ahead and there it was - The first TB bumper sticker in this area I ever had the privilege to see! It was on a white Colt bakkie with FS number plates. The black driver is highly likely not a biker, but I was thrilled :cheers::cheers: . You folks in Gauteng's used to seeing stickers everywhere but this is a rare sight for me. My husband's biker buddy Jacques owns one of the Kestell bottle stores which is also clubhouse and I have given him some stickers and pamphlets. I suspect the bakkie belongs to one of his customers. So probably this guy will not become a TB member but at least he is spreading the message in a visible way - Lotsa taxis in this area too. Locals in this area generally poor and not used to freebies so a free bumper sticker is a prized item. Very few local bikers in Qwa Qwa, mostly on scoots with no ATTGATT. There was this one guy who worked with me who bought a Suzi GSXR1000 or something; he came to me after my husband's passing and asked if I don't have old ATTGATT he can buy. I gave him some old gloves but unfortunately did not have a second jacket. He just had a helmet and was already travelling the 75km from Bethlehem to Qwa Qwa on a daily basis with the bike. Strange how people can spend alot on a bike and then not willing to spend on safety gear. What's the possibility of doing a display that's similar to the one in Nortwest on Saturday 23 Aug somewhere at a central point in this area? The general road users and public here needs to be educated with the bikers.

So BMWtjie, I wanna start arranging for the weekend we spoke about. Going have a meeting with chairman of Bethlehem MCC's later this week but I need to give him details because I wanna arrange a proper thing. If you do TiTTS in Bloemf on Friday 22 Aug and I meet you on route like we discussed, what time can we do a function for MCC's in Bethlehem? Will you also be avail for Saturday morning for something in Eastern Free State? How about the mock accident thing that attracted so much attention in NW? I found a small group of BMW riders in Harrismith last week - borrowed my bib this weekend as example, will get feedback today / tomorrow, possibly some prospective TB'ers  Can we perhaps have a separate thread for Think Bike Events - Free State?

I know the date is linked to the memorial, but just keep in mind that it might be more affordable to some of us to do it the next weekend...

However, yes, I reckon it's still on. Just need to contact the Bloemfontein peeps to arrange the Friday thing, then we leave Bloem Saturday morning, meet up along the way and "do our thing" in Bethlehem and wherever else.

So if we can get some ideas of how many would like to ride down to the Vrystaat on the Thursday arvie or Friday just before sparrow's, do TiTTS thing in Bloemfontein, meet with the local clubs, sleep over and ride to the East Free State on Saturday, sleep over at Casa Mallory and back on Sunday.

Can we please fix or change this date now? BMWtjie mentioned something about Zoo lake marshalling on the 30th weekend? My diary's pretty much cramped between now and October and I need to know where we're gonna fit this weekend in. I wanna do a proper thing and don't want to arrange this at the last minute. There's a possibility that we can use the parking area outside the New Frontier Casino in Bethlehem on the Clarens road on Saturday morning and I have to book it well in advance. MCC's also waiting for me to confirm. I also need to do a local newspaper thing preferrably 2 weeks before the time. Will it be better to move it back to 23 Aug then?

Apart from the obviously nice company you'll be in :evil4: you will slave away at the TB stand on the Bethlehem airshow until 21:00 on Saturday night en probably have to brave freezing weather, so bring warm clothes. I've already taken the drink orders, so if you drink anything else than RH & Coke or are a vegetarian you'll have to bring it with. Last I heard Villiers-Frankfort-Tweeling-Reitz road was in a very sorry state, please be careful, last time I drove it had huge potholes  I'd rather pay and stay on the N3 till Warden offramp, but that's from a cager's perspective I suppose :evil4:

I am along for the ride and I don't really mind which road we take. I suppose it is not going to be a mad dash down there, so even the Heilbron, PetrusSteyn, Reitz road is OK. Daytime visibility should help as well.

Mad Artist and I have just come back from Clarens.

The Villiers-Frankfort road is an absolute mess. Massive potholes - we even had to drive at 40 during the day. Rest of road is crumbling apart.

But from Frankfort-tweeling-reitz it is not so bad. Apart from some serious road works where one lane is closed down - so all traffic is filteres through one lane. A bit frustrating but at least traffic moves.

I still think it is the quickest way to get there though.

Just a thought.

Mallory
22-08-2008, 08:07 PM
Just checked it out in my map book. From Villiers via Frankfort, Tweeling, Reitz to Bethlehem is 152km, from Villiers via Warden to Bethlehem is 182km, 30km + one extra tollgate the price to pay for a better condition road, up to you. Please be careful. I will be at the airshow at 07:30 because the exhibitors must be in before 8. The show was already very busy today, gonna buzz tomorrow. Already a MCC in Harrismith called me today to say they will make a turn during the morning; possibly response to the newspaper article & info they got from the bikeshops. The only problem is that I only got 4 gate passes. I called the main organiser this afternoon but he is adament that he cannot make exceptions because there are many large exhibitors and everyone gets 4 tickets only. Seeing that we got the stand for free I didn't want to push further. One pass I will be using and one I have given to a local disciple who's bringing the fold-up tables tomorrow morning and helping me until you arrive. That leaves us with two passes and the rest of us will pay R40 per person admission. Perhaps we can divide the balance amongst all of us. We got a double stand close to the entrance gate, I will definitely see you when you arrive. I mentioned that one or two of our bikes  are part of the display, the stand is big enough that the bikes can park on it; if anybod's funny at the gate and I am not around just throw the name "Migael" around, he's driving around on a black quad :director:- I asked him about bringing in the bikes (though I lied a bit about the numbers :evil4:). No driving out once you're in. Cars only allowed to load or unload stuff and then go to outside parking. Looking forward to have you all here, drive safely. Today the weather was quite pleasant, so it may not be that cold after all . For those of you who do not have my cell no just in case: oh ate for - ate oh faif - tree sevn nain sevn. Mallory have a lot of new contacts to go and hares, We possible picked up a new sponsor and we were invited to another Air show in Heidelberg next year. There were a couple of new lessons learned but that I will take on in the committee level

Great time had by all. The Mallory hospitality was SUPERB...

The ride home today was a little long, and the poor wife, who doesn't like driving, had to drive nearly 500km, she did great until about 4 km's from home, and then we lost each other, as she didn't see me turn off, luckily she managed to find her way back through all the traffic...

Thanks to all, Richardvz, madartist, Hei Ew, Knuckles, Enduro, Mallory and Blackie... We had a great time,

Oh, thanks to enduro my right sock was still wet when I got home, 8 hours later... and my toes looked like dried prunes.. Shot, but it was fun

Thank you for the memorial run today and going all those extra km's to do the route on my behalf. Glad you made it back home ok . You all made me proud this weekend and I am truly honoured to be associated with this campaign and it's people :salute::salute::salute:. I am still in Hennenman, will be driving home tomorrow at 05.30. Unfortunately my camera's PC cable is in Kestell, but I will hopefully be posting some pictures by tomorrow evening. I am going to write a full report on the weekend. All the adventures, all the fun, all the personalities:evil4:m all the skinner:evil4:, all the dirt, all the aches and pains and will be posting it on my blog.

But for now I want to thank the mob. We had a fantastic time. All got home safe. All is fabulous.

Mallory - Thank you for your extremely generous hospitality. You have a really beautiful home and we felt most welcome there. You are more than welcome to stay over at our house any day time. We also have a lot of animals - but we don't have any donkeys. (Except my Dakar of course - but that is a whole new adventure).

Thank you all. It was absolutely magic. I always dreamed of doing Golden Gate on a bike. And it was realised. I am speechless. Airshow was fabulous. People in the Freestate are extremely friendly and extremely curteous on the roads.

Now - back to work for me - lots of meetings today.

:salute: Mallory thank you for your hospitality , please feel free to use Richardvz's house when u come to Johannesburg.. my house unfortunitely is the size of your kitchen. and please bring your mouse biltong with next time you visit jhb.

Blackie thanks for coming thru for the day, i hear the clown , i hear the clown ... ?? wonder if we can have some clowns at the next think bike event ??

Mad Artist and Richardvz on the donkey :evil4: .. always fun having to listen to your stories and sorry about getting your lost on your way home [lets add that to Enduro's list]

to Knuckes on the FJ "the best bike, Yamaha ever built" thanks for joining and taking over the firemaking, braai-ing and breakfast mixing thing , which as delish.

Nelian and Family , it was a gr8 experiance and will not be forgotten ,gr8 to see a daddy running around for his little miss sunshine all day :evil4: u're a gr8 dad . one word . owned

Janine - you were scared to drive , no ways , u did a fantastic job . sorry we missed the last petrol station . i didn't see Nelian standng there either!!

Mallory for the supper of burnt chicken but delish chops and wors [oh ja burnt offering was thanks to knuckles :evil4:.. the breakfast was better than the full english breakfast i actually ordered , thanks to the ladies for preparing all the food and knuckles for doing the burning i mean cooking..
you have loverly dogs , i love dogs .. especially fried chilli strips and rice.

Enduro your next bmw assesory needs to be a gps :evil4:
always taking us the wrong way and doing it with style .. all is forgiven because you took us thru us the golden gate best kept secret.:notworthy:
keep those socks on the right foot !!
you are one very fast lady , i always knew that [marshalling with you for so long] but wow you can fly around those corners .. ps don't worry i won't tell anyone that you had to pee on the rand airport ramp while we waited for the guys to meetup..

i enjoyed a slow ride home of 160/180km/h.
at one stage cars would flash me that there were speed traps ahead , once passed the speed traps i decided to do the same for the oncoming traffic , so i would press the button and after the 5th or 6th time i realised my bluetooth headset made a beep noise when i pressed my "passing light" button...??
i realised i was pressing the hooter  ..

and i keep swearing by my Q2 headset nothing is better , well i will definitely be using earplugs when we go to Clarens on the 20th and try to have a mp3 player plugging into 1 ear , hopefully not playing hello orlando on loop :evil4: nomatter how cool that sounds  ..

i would encourage you , if you haven't done a trip to Clarens with think bike guys .. do it ..
we are well behaved and know all the best routes , potholes etc

favorite part of the weekend :
the ride thru golden gate , expecially the way enduro took us , scary but oh so worthwhile.

fleamarket stalls as far as the eye could see and still those around the corner .. things on show/for sale : think bike memberships . stalls for t shirts that say 100% boere seunjie in pink ??, a place with herbal body stuff , some woodern orniments and a guy selling stuff for tyres that stop punchures [still to be seen as we have his details and will be doing a write up soon] , there were the yamaha and honda guys which we were very sad to see they had no skills as salesman , could not sell a coke to a thursty man!! the mt03 was there even had the dust enduro left on it from the soweto tour , stalls with caps and sunglasses , toys , sweets and biscuts cakes and liquers , shoes and jackets , okay so u got my drift , walking around was fun and that was not even half way i haven't even got to all the food stalls that were available or the fact that the airshow was truely amazing and entertaining . i tried to put a thinkbike sticker on a tank , but the komandant was not to keen on me doing that. he said it might attract attention?? like a tank won't ? :salute:

i suppose the icecream vendors were one of our best advertisments , with thinkbike sticks all over thier icecream boxes  some kids stuck them to thier t-shirts , i personally asked the kids to stick them on thier parents cars .

oh plenty of nice ladies , plenty , did i mention the loverly ladies ??
and someone say there were no pretty ladies in the free state?? they never been to an event in the free state if they still believe that nonsence .. the best bike at the air show was defintly my bandit
richardvz had to give me a seat when i was leaning on his bmw , didn't want me to get my hands dirty?
the other bikes were not even looked at but mine was touched and photos were taken on my bike ..

ohkay enuff from me
gotta recover from the weekend and do some work whoo hoo
if you need more ride reports look out for richardvz's report it will be off the wall funny as is all sir Richard's stories..

Today's event was a big success in terms of the targets I set for myself. Three new signed up members who bought bibs as well, another bib sold, 8 T-shirts and a good amount of R10 stickers, as well as plenty free stickers handed out to the general public. What I initially saw as an obstacle, babysitter cancelling at the last moment, turned out to be a blessing because my 3 kids were absolute stars, my 7 yr old daughter Sera in particular. She does not take no for an answer and made sure that no passer by were skipped with stickers and lollipops for the kiddies. Needless to say that all 3 of them are absolutely exhausted but Sera said tonight that today was the nicest day she's ever had in her life; I will definitely involve them wherever I can in events from now on. Being around bikers and bikes mean a lot to them, I seem to have forgotten that in my hectic program. There was a lot of feet at this event, no gate entrance was charged; and it's an annual event that has become a tradition. I shared a stand with Custom Riders, a MCC from Harrismith. The chairperson Willie joined today and so did his sexy (but married, sorry guys) daugther Melanie and her husband. They are very enthusiastic, and even had their own display board of bike accident victims and stuff they got from the internet. Melanie actually changed into the spaghetti top on the backseat of my car, so excited she was with her new purchase. Nice smalltown people, very hospitable and easy-going. They offered that I drop my gazebo off at Willie’s shop yesterday, they arranged a table for me and when I got there I could just unpack the stock and get going. The prior newspaper coverage definitely worked wonders too - Quite a few people came to ask if it was my clip in the local paper. I am thinking seriously about doing an awareness day in Qwa Qwa to target the taxi drivers and owners - a mock accident would be appropriate there. What bothered me today was the few black and coloured people who attended the event. The taxi's who leave Qwa Qwa for Gauteng are the very same ones who end up on the Gauteng highways. Next landmark event for Eastern FS would be Ficksburg Cherry Festival 22 Nov. Will keep you posted of new recruitments and developments.
